Using Science to Enrich Beautiful Landscapes
Viburnums can be a great choice but it is very important to select the best cultivars which have the highest resistance to Viburnum Leaf Beetles. Some cultivars like “Cranberrybush” and “Sargent” are very susceptible to complete defoliation caused by the infamous insects that devour them over night. At times even the more resistant cultivars like “Korean Spice” and “Mohawk” can be attacked so it is important to keep a sharp eye out for the Viburnum Beetle’s egg masses located on the stems from April to October. A simple light pruning may just do the trick preventing the need for spraying. We prefer to avoid spraying unless there is a real need to save the plant because we don’t want to affect the beneficial insects.
